SODIUM BENTONITE USES & PRODUCTS

Sodium Bentonite is a naturally occurring, absorbent material consisting mostly of the mineral montmorillonite. The clay is typically formed when water alters volcanic ash, and occurs as layers sandwiched between other types of rocks. When placed in water, bentonite’s unique properties enable it to absorb 7 to 10 times its own weight and expand up to 18 times its dry volume. The mineral’s swelling, absorbing and viscosity behaviors have earned it the nickname “Clay of 1,000 Uses.”

Since 1947, Black Hills Bentonite has processed high-quality Wyoming Sodium Bentonite for a diverse range of industrial and commercial applications. These uses include absorbents, environmental and civil engineering, drilling fluids, metal casting and hole plugging for boreholes and wells.

Our products are typically shipped by rail.

Absorbents

The absorbing and binding characteristics of our bentonite makes it ideal for use in products such as natural clumping cat litter, animal feed bonding, and taconite iron ore pellets. It also provides superior sealing results for industrial uses, including certain water treatments.

Black Hills Bond

Black Hills Bond is a non-treated, natural, Wyoming Sodium Bentonite. In fine powder form, it is used for soil amendments in the construction of landfills, lagoons, and water ponds, which effectively lowers permeability rates and provides superior sealing results. Other uses include: absorbents, animal feed bonding, iron ore taconite pelletizing and foundry casting.

Mineral Colloid 103

Mineral Colloid 103 is a non-treated, natural Wyoming Bentonite. It exhibits lower swelling characteristics due to its natural sodium/calcium mixture, which is ideal for the bonding of metal casting sands. Other uses include animal feed bonding.

Environmental and Civil Engineering

Bentonite’s low-permeability sealing qualities are utilized in many environmental and civil engineering applications. These include water treatment, low solids water well drilling, horizontal boring, slurry trenching and containment barriers, construction of reservoirs, pond sealing, and rehabilitation of landfills.

Black Hills Gel

Black Hills Gel is a premium Wyoming Sodium Bentonite, manufactured to the standards of API 13A Section 9. It is a preferred product for use in oil well drilling, slurry trenching, and many other civil engineering applications.

Bentonite Plug 3/8” or 3/4” Chips

Bentonite Plug is a natural Wyoming Sodium Bentonite sized to 3/8″ or 3/4″ chips and is certified as NSF/ANSI/CAN 60. Uses include the sealing of abandoned water wells, drill holes, animal stock tanks, irrigation ditches and seismic shot holes and monitor well casing.

Drilling Fluids

Our bentonite products are used in drilling applications. The use of bentonite in drilling fluid lubricates and cools the cutting tools, protects against corrosion, reduces friction, impedes fluid and gas penetration, and lifts the drill cuttings to the surface to be removed.

Metal Casting

Bentonite is used in the molding processes of metal casting. When mixed with foundry molding sands, Bentonite forms a pliable bond with the sand. Impressions are formed in the bentonite/sand mixtures, and then molten metal is poured into the impressions. Upon completion, the bentonite/sand mold is broken away from the casting face and reused.

Hole Plugging for Boreholes and Wells

Bentonite is used to seal abandoned wells to block groundwater seepage into subsurface aquifer sand to prevent water supply contamination. Applications include: water well abandonment, oil well abandonment, and seismic bore hole plugging.  Other uses include sealing animal stock tanks, irrigation ditches and seismic shot holes.

Briquette Nodules

Briquette Nodules are manufactured from non-treated, natural, Wyoming Sodium Bentonite. Briquette Nodules are designed for oil well and drill hole abandonment. The product is made by compressing raw bentonite into a hardened, uniquely shaped 2”x ¾” briquette nodule. Once dropped into a deep water bore hole, the nodules will effectively swell and seal the hole.
